Introduction and Problem Statement: Faraja (Law Enforcement Force of the Islamic Republic of Iran), as one of the most extensive service-providing organizations in the country, with numerous buildings scattered across diverse climates and the critical responsibility of ensuring public security, requires a revision of the architectural design standards for its subordinate facilities. This research focuses on police station buildings.
Research Objective: The main objective of this research is to explain the requirements and considerations of architectural design along two key axes—"passive defense" and "energy conservation"—and to present a generative design system for producing optimal architectural plans.
Research Method: The present study was conducted with a developmental-applied approach, utilizing computer simulation and generative algorithms. In the first step, the theoretical framework was developed by reviewing documents, design standards, and domestic and international case studies. In the second step, a generative design system was designed and implemented on the platform of Rhino and Grasshopper software, which is capable of generating hundreds of plan alternatives based on the physical program, adjacency relationships, passive defense principles (reducing elongation, eliminating internal void spaces), and energy optimization criteria (solar radiation reception and surface-to-volume ratio), and then screening and ranking them according to hierarchical filters.
Key Findings:
1. Passive Defense Requirements: The need to redefine the position of sensitive spaces (such as the command room) and to revise structural design standards based on passive defense principles.
2. Energy and Climate Considerations: Full alignment of building form with climatic conditions (radiation reception in cold climates and its reduction in hot climates) and the application of passive strategies.
3. Integration: Discovering the inherent alignment between passive defense objectives (reducing elongation) and energy optimization (reducing surface-to-volume ratio) at the macro level of building form.
Conclusion: The proposed plan-generation design system, with a significant reduction in the design process time (from several weeks to less than 12 hours) and the provision of optimal multi-criteria options, represents an effective step toward developing integrated design principles for Faraja's security buildings. This research is proposed as a foundation for establishing dynamic and developable standards in this field.
